These ‘aardappelkrabbers’ are metal heads for fingertips. They were worn when taking patatoes out of the earth. In the nineteenth century dirt collected from the street was commonly use as a fertilizer. When taking the potatoes out of this ‘fertilized’ earth it was necessary to protect your fingers from glass, stone and splinters.
