A technique, which permanently alters the protein structure of the skin after it is taken from the dead body. It is done to prevent decay without loosing the original characteristic of the skin.
Tanning can be done with a wide variety of ingredients and methods. After a skin endured a tanning process it is called leather. Within my work I call all surfaces (or objects) that consist out of proteins and that have been gone through a process of tanning: leather.
